Benton, Lewis Herbert (1872-1939)
Photograph of the Lake railroad station in the town of Litchfield, Connecticut, taken by Lewis Herbert Benton. [This description was provided by Richard A. Fleischer: A spur track in the right middle distance led to the ice house on Bantam Lake. A track scale for weighing loaded railroad cars is at the right. The gauntleted track (a stretch of railroad track where two lines of track overlap so that one rail of each track is within the rails of the other in order to obviate switching) at the right foreground had two live rails that crossed the weighing bridge and two dead rails to carry rail traffic bypassing the track scale. The two rails of the track on the scale used for weighing cars are called live rails. The two rails of the track that did not transfer the weight of railroad cars passing by the scale are called dead rails.]
