[Additional information from Robert Joseph Belletzkie: The grandeur of the 1888 Branford, Connecticut, station was perhaps unmatched in the state. Lewis Herbert Benton caught the sweeping curve, the rounded turret rising skyward and the covershed and platform that mirror the bend in the track. The station was demolished in 1939 after damage sustained in the hurricane of the previous year and declining patronage that encouraged the then-bankrupt New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad to downsize. The smokestack and buildings at right are the Malleable Iron Fittings Company.]

[Additional information from Richard A. Fleischer: Broad Brook was located on the Armory Branch between East Hartford, Connecticut, and Springfield, Massachusetts. The Brill gas-electric car at the left was a cost-saving measure of the 1920s which provided minimal branch line passenger service more economically than a steam locomotive and passenger cars. Benton and his traveling companion Irving Drake watched a mail sack being handled between the station and the car.]
